HabitAT School Census

HabitAT School Census

"Where helping out the habitat is a habit AT school"

This highly interactive tool has been developed by the LfS team to assist students and teachers discover and assess the habitat quality of their school grounds.

How the Census Works

The HabitAT School Census explores the school ground from the perspective of nine habitat features. With accompanying student worksheets, supporting teacher notes and other tools, the task of understanding what can be a complex web of relationships becomes a simple matter of working through a basic study of each element in turn.

It is worth remembering while there are obvious overlaps, each of the features is a valuable attribute in its own right and but none can support biodiversity in isolation. The ideal school ground would score highly in all nine categories.

The worksheets have been developed to suit the forest type your school is located in. The forest types have been broken into two categories wet forest and dry forest.

The HabitAT School Census and Awards have been developed to assist schools in completing parts of the Biodiversity Module of the Learning for Sustainability schools program. Click here to find out your school's forest type
