About the Program

The Learning for Sustainability program aims to help schools gain a stronger understanding of their ecological footprint , how they use resources, but most of all how students, staff and members of the broader school community can make a difference working towards a more sustainable future.  The Learning for Sustainability program (LfS) has been developed to support local schools to incorporate sustainability practices and principals into the curriculum, school grounds and broader school community.

The LfS program consists of five steps:

  •  STEP 1 - Awakening,
  •  STEP 2 -  Discovering,
  •  STEP 3 - Achieving,
  •  STEP 4 - Transforming, and
  •  STEP 5 -  Leading

STEP 1 is the commitment step that sets a school up with the processes for organising and documenting their journey. STEPS 2 to 5 move through the key areas of the program: Water, Habitat, Energy, Materials and Community. Each step aims to help a school move towards sustainability leadership, where they discover, take action, review and engage with their community; with a focus on how much energy and water the school uses, waste it produces, and how best to understand and care for the plants and animals surrounding them.

Setting a New Direction

The LfS program recognises that sustainability is not so much a destination with a defined end point, but a direction that we choose to travel in – a journey toward an ever-retreating horizon. As our world continues to change, so must we adjust our lifestyles and habits to achieve a balance with the needs of the natural world – a balance we can imagine could be sustained indefinitely. The LfS program has been developed with this in mind, providing school with the framework, resources and on ground support to assist them along the way.

Adapt the program to suit your school

Council encourages schools to show their creative abilities and use the framework of the LfS program as a guide to what needs to be achieved and why. Schools should adapt the program to suit their unique school environment. Council believes that schools know the best way to fit the program into their curriculum; however our dedicated Learning for Sustainability Officers can provide advice and support as needed.

Each step we take towards sustainability helps our environment, and with this is mind, just beginning the program means we are on our way to a more sustainable future.
